Background of the Study

Plastic pollution is a growing environmental concern worldwide, with significant implications for public health. In Gombe State, like many other regions, the improper disposal of plastic waste leads to pollution of water bodies, soil, and streets. Plastics take hundreds of years to decompose, and as they accumulate in the environment, they pose a threat to both ecosystems and human health. Plastic waste often contains harmful chemicals that can leach into the environment, affecting both terrestrial and aquatic life. This study seeks to evaluate the impact of plastic pollution on public health in Gombe State, particularly focusing on the health hazards caused by plastic waste in urban and rural areas.

Statement of the Problem

In Gombe State, plastic pollution has become a significant environmental issue, with vast quantities of plastic waste discarded improperly. The accumulation of plastic waste has led to blocked drainage systems, soil degradation, and pollution of water sources. These environmental hazards are known to contribute to various health problems, such as waterborne diseases and toxic exposure from chemicals in plastics. However, there is insufficient research on the direct link between plastic pollution and public health outcomes in the region. This study aims to bridge this gap and assess the health impacts of plastic pollution in Gombe State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the extent of plastic pollution in Gombe State.
  2. To evaluate the health hazards posed by plastic pollution in the state.
  3. To explore strategies for mitigating the health risks associated with plastic waste in Gombe State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the extent of plastic pollution in Gombe State?
  2. What are the health hazards associated with plastic pollution in Gombe State?
  3. What measures can be taken to reduce the health impacts of plastic pollution in Gombe State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Plastic pollution in Gombe State is significantly associated with an increase in waterborne diseases, such as cholera and dysentery.
  2. The accumulation of plastic waste contributes to soil contamination and respiratory diseases in Gombe State.
  3. Implementing waste management strategies focused on reducing plastic pollution will lead to a decrease in plastic-related health issues in Gombe State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on the impact of plastic pollution on public health in both urban and rural areas of Gombe State. Limitations may include the difficulty of obtaining detailed data on plastic waste management and the challenge of linking specific health outcomes directly to plastic pollution due to multiple environmental factors.

Definitions of Terms

  • Plastic Pollution: The accumulation of plastic materials in the environment, which adversely affects ecosystems and public health.
  • Waterborne Diseases: Diseases that are transmitted through contaminated water, often associated with poor waste management and pollution.
  • Waste Management: The collection, disposal, recycling, and treatment of waste materials in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner.
